[c. 1384]
Description
Petitioners
William Bagot.
Name(s)
Bagot, William
Addressees
Council.
Nature of request
William Bagot states that John Ray of Coventry, farmer of the office of alnager in the counties of Warwickshire, Leicestershire, Staffordshire, and Shropshire, made claims to the council about the sale of unsealed cloth called 'russets' and 'dudds' in Coventry, accusing various people; but that he then came to an agreement with the accused, on the payment of £100 to the king and £100 to John, in deceit of the king, telling the council that the inquest would go against the king and that he should accept this sum; when he should really have had 1000 marks. And John has also on other occasions taken fines for his own use, without accusing the people from whom he took them. William asks the council to consider these things, and to take security from him to pursue this case, and to arrest John on security of £1000 to answer to the king and council on this matter, or to remain in prison until the matter can be dealt with. And he requests a commission to John de Clynton, Baldwin Frevill, John Pecche, William Bagot and Thomas Purfrey to enquire into the matter.
Nature of endorsement
William Bagot puts in his place John de Kirkeby and Henry Malpas, clerks, to sue and do each and all things contained in this bill etc.
