Description
Petitioners
Henry le Cantuascer (Canevacer) of Winchester.
Name(s)
Cantuascer (Canevacer), Henry
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Henry le Cantuascer of Winchester states that the king's father, by the evil counsel of Hugh le Despenser the son, Robert de Baldok, and Robert de Holden, stocked Porchester castle with old wines taken at sea from the enemy, which became rotten; and then, by the counsel of the same people, he sent for Henry to come from Winchester, and imprisoned him for seven days at Porchester because he would not willingly receive these wines; and before he could be released, he was charged with twenty-five tuns of these wines, at 60 s. each. He found the Abbot of Hyde as mainpernor for this debt, and found this security by distraint made against him in the Bench. When he could not sell the wines in England, he shipped them to Flanders, at great cost, where many of the tuns were broken and his people imprisoned, so that they scarcely escaped with their lives. He requests a remedy, and that he might be able to pay for the wines what he received for them, by good account, or their true value by a good inquest.
Nature of endorsement
Certain people are to be appointed in Chancery to inquire, in the presence of Stephen de Abyndon, then the king's butler, to be warned if he wishes to be present, into what the value of the wines was at the time of their delivery to the aforementioned Henry, and if Henry took them by force and against his will or not, and into other circumstances touching this matter. And when the inquisition has been taken and returned in Chancery, it is to be shown to the king so that the king may speak his will on it.[The beginnings of a previous response, in similar terms, but not mentioning Henry by name, have been deleted.]Enrolled.
