Peter (Pey) de Martilak (Martilliac), castellan of Saint-Macaire.
Name(s)
de Martilak (Martilliac), Peter (Pey)
Addressees
King.
Occupation
castellan of Saint-Macaire
Nature of request
Peter de Martilak, castellan of Saint-Macaire, makes two requests:1) He states that he has served the king and his father for thirty years and more, and that because of his service, he has lost all his lands and goods in Gascony. He has held the castle of Saint-Macaire for twelve [or possibly eleven] years and more, at wages of 12d. sterling a day, which are too small to enable him to live and guard the castle. He requests the keeping of the castle for term of life, at wages of 2s. sterling a day.2) He asks that the Constable of Bordeaux might account with him for his wages, and pay him what he finds to be due to him.
Nature of endorsement
[On face, to first] The king is not advised to increase his wages.[To second] The Constable is to be ordered to make payment.[None on dorse]
Places mentioned
Saint-Macaire, [Guyenne, France]
Gascony, [France].
People mentioned
[Edward II], King of England.
Note
The instructions to give the petitioner the castle for term of life, at the higher wages, on m.24 of C 61/54 are dated 1 June 16 Edward III (1342). Although the king does not grant the request here, they would seem to be a response to the petition, or at least to date from very shortly afterwards, as they mention Peter's service of thirty years and more, and are described as being 'per petitionem de consilio'.
