Description
Petitioners
People of Puymirol.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The petitioners, probably the people of Puymirol, state that Arnold de Bovisvilla, junior, was given the bailiwick of the castle of Puymirol by the king, to hold during good behaviour, but that, although he had done nothing to deserve it, Oliver de Ingham, Seneschal of Gascony, removed him from that bailiwick, took it into the king's hand, and delivered it to another to govern. The petitioners state that they know of no reason why it should have been taken from Arnold, and ask that it might be returned to him for life and during good behaviour. They further utterly repudiate what has apparently been said by a master Bertran Codena, that if Arnold de Bovisvilla is not removed, they will appeal to the King of France.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Puymirol, [Guyenne, France].
People mentioned
Arnold (Arnaut) de Bovisvilla, junior
Oliver de Ingham, knight, Seneschal of Gascony
Bertran (Bertram) Codena
King of France.
Note
Oliver de Ingham was Seneschal of Gascony between March 1326 and February 1327, and between June 1332 and July 1343. Puymirol was granted to Arnold de Bovisvilla at pleasure on 1 May 4 Edward III (1330) (m.8 of C 61/42). He still held it on 25 February of the following year, when an ordinance was made for his pay and that of his men (m.17 of C 61/43). This petition would therefore seem to date from between 1332 and (from the reference to a potential appeal to the king of France) the outbreak of the Hundred Years War in 1337.
