Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The petition makes three requests:1) It asks the king to be advised concerning certain gifts he has made, as he has given away so much that little lands remains to him, and has overcharged the customs of Bordeaux, which brings in very little, even though it is time of peace. It asks that before he makes a gift he might inform himself of the value of what he will give, and how the person he gives it to has served him.2) The petitioner states that he has delivered to Arnold de Durffort the lordship that the king had in the bailiwick of Labourd, as the king had given this bailiwick to him, but had given the other rents pertaining to him to Raymond Duraunt and Galhard his son. Because of this, the greater part of the gentlemen and of the commons of the land have appealed to the king concerning this gift, and a great war has arisen between the people of Labourd and Arnold de Durffort. The petitioner fears the involvement of the people of Bayonne, and is going to those parts to try to provide the best remedy possible.3) The petitioner asks the king to command his will concerning various gifts of bailiwicks to various people.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] Coram rege.[To second] The things concerning which a dispute has arisen are to be taken into the king's hand, until the king is informed. And the parties are to be written to, and also to the good people of Bayonne, to be patient; and the king will make such an ordinance that they will consider themselves to be content.[None on dorse]
