Date

Description
Petitioners
Commons in parliament
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The petition asks the king to consider how his progenitors founded many houses of religion in England which are subject to other houses overseas, and how French monks are sent to govern these English houses, who do not understand English people or the manners of the land, so that through their ignorance these houses are often badly governed; and their heads have always refused to appoint English monks to these houses. It asks the king to write to these heads, asking them to appoint deputies or vicars in England, and to present to the king and other lords English-born monks to govern these houses, so that they can be properly governed, especially as most of the monks in these houses are English, and quite capable of governing them.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
France.
Note
This petition follows closely the first part of a common petition on the parliament roll of 1376 (PROME, parliament of 1376, item 128) and seems to represent a first version of the final enrolled version.
