SC 8/293/14601
Date
[c. 1337-1340]
Description
Petitioners
John (Joan) de Harriata (Harriete), king's clerk living in Bordeaux.
Name(s)
de Harriata (Harriete), John (Joan)
Addressees
King.
Places mentioned
Bordeaux, [Guyenne, France]
Gascony, [France]
Condom, [Gascony, France]
Condomois, [Gascony, France].
Nature of request
John de Harriata states that he and his people have long been in the king's service without receiving any grace, and that he has suffered great damages because of the war in Gascony. He asks that when God has given the king the victory, and the Condomois is in his hands, he might have the scrivenership of Condom and the Condomois and the fee for sealing of the same place, with appurtenances, for term of life.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] Several people have requested these offices, to whom the king has granted a letter of information.[None on dorse].
Note
The petitioner was granted the scrivenership of Saintonge, currently in the hands of the French, on 21 June 14 Edward III (1340) (m.16 of C 61/52). This may well be in response to this petition, which would seem to date from before 1340, but after the outbreak of the Hundred Years War.
