Date
[c. 1331]
Description
Petitioners
Alice de Befroi, widow of Rayner (Renier) de Befroi, burgess of Bristol, and executrix of his testament.
Name(s)
de Befroi, Alice
Addressees
Chancellor.
Nature of request
Alice, widow of Rayner de Befroi, states that her husband died of natural causes on a voyage to Guyenne, and his body was taken in a small boat to Cornwall and buried there. His companions and fellow-burgesses took his goods, jewels and money, which were in a coffer on the ship, with them, for greater security, but when they arrived in Bordeaux, Peter de Galiciene, then Constable of Bordeaux, took that coffer by force and took it into the king's hand, claiming that Rayner had died intestate. The court was later apprised that he had made a will, and Peter was ordered by the king's letters patent to deliver the coffer to Alice; but although he has handed over the coffer, jewels and goods, he has not paid the money. She requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
Because Peter has acknowledged the receipt of the monies in Chancery [replacing 'court that bears record'], as is contained in her bill, execution is to be done against him to levy the same monies from his goods in England and in Gascony, and elsewhere.
