Description
Petitioners
Peter (Pey) Dartiguelunque (Artiguelongue), merchant of Bayonne.
Name(s)
Dartiguelunque (Artiguelongue), Peter (Pey)
Addressees
King and council.
Places mentioned
Bayonne, [Gascony, France]
Gascony, [France]
Clarendon, [Wiltshire].
Nature of request
Peter Dartiguelunque, petitioning on behalf of himself and his companions, merchants of Bayonne, states that he was charged with carrying letters and special messages to Gascony during the last war, and that he had loaded his ship in England with cloth and corn to take to Bayonne, for the sustenance of the king's people there, but it was attacked and robbed at sea by the king's enemies, and some of those within killed. The king responded to Peter's complaint by ordering an inquisition at Clarendon, and then ordering payment of two-thirds of his losses; and this debt was enrolled in the roll of the debts of the merchants of Bayonne. He requests payment of his debt, as he has remained in England at the king's command since that time, awaiting payment, and has incurred great expenses; and the Mayor and people of Bayonne have written to the king to ask this.
Nature of endorsement
The Treasurer and Chamberlains of the Exchequer are to be ordered that if it is found in the rolls to be as it is said, the payment is to be made according to the command previously given by the king.
Note
CCR 1296-1302 p.98 is dated 1 April 1297, and asks for satisfaction to be given to the petitioner. This petition would seem to be later, and is probably from 1305, like the others in this file. The matter was clearly not resolved: Gascon Rolls 1307-17 no.773 is dated 8 November 1312, no.779 is dated 21 November 1312, and no.782 is dated 28 November 1312.
