Reference
SC 8/291/14513
Date
[1305]
Description
Petitioners
Brask (Beras, Berard) de Tardetz (Tardets).
Name(s)
de Tardetz (Tardets), Brask (Beras, Berard)
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Brask de Tardetz states that the Earl of Lincoln and Otto de Grandsun leased the land of Marensin to him at farm, but that he cannot afford to pay the farm. He asks that the king might allow the arrears of the farm to him in payment of his wages, and [in future] continue to allow it against his wages and provisions, until all those debts have been fully paid, so that he and [the others] who have been exiled and expelled from their lands, can support themselves until they have recovered their lands. And if this does not please the king, he asks that he might have an allowance in some other suitable place.
Nature of endorsement
With regard to the debt that the king owes him by his letters: the letters are to be examined by John de Sandale and Thomas de Cantebrigge, and they are to keep the letters and then deliver them to the Treasury, and then letters are to be issued to him under the great seal to be paid from the issues of Gascony by the Constable of Bordeaux; and for the remainder, he is to put up with it.Item, the Seneschal and Constable are to be ordered to lease to Beras de Tarba the bailiwick of Marensin that he holds for the price at which the Earl of Lincoln and of Savoy delivered it to him; and the Constable is to allow to the said Beras what we owe him for his wages against the said bailiwick.
Places mentioned
Marensin, [Gascony, France].
People mentioned
[Henry de Lacy], Earl of Lincoln
Otto de Grandsun (Grandson, Grandison)
John de Sandale
Thomas de Cantebr[igge] (Cambridge).
Note
Dated to 1305 with reference to Roles Gascons, vol. III no.4865, which is dated 6 April 1305, and no.4761 which is dated 1 April 1305: these seem to be in response to this petition. Roles Gascons, vol. III no.4663 and no.4768 concern a related matter. This petition seems to be the second of two: the first (possibly from a different petitioner) may have been the petition about a debt that provoked the first response.
