Name(s)
de Durefort (Durfort), Arnold (Arnaut)
Nature of request
[This petition is badly faded and almost entirely illegible, with large holes at the top and bottom. From the endorsement, this petition must contain eight petitions. The following are legible]1) A long, almost entirely illegible petition concerning Labourd.2) A request for a protocol or register to be searched for in Chancery concerning Galhard Durant and Raymond Duraunt of Colombiers and the land of Labourd. . . . is said to have been deceived in £100 sterling.3) The Seneschal of Gascony or his lieutenant has been given orders by the king's letters cocnerning Arnold Gassia de . . . called Vasco of . . . and the land of Born, which is to be delivered to Arnold as the heir of Arnold.4) A petition concerning the Mayor, jurats, peers and whole community of Bayonne.5) Arnold asks that he might be retained at wages to serve the king.6) Another petition concerning service for wages.7) Requests payment of 500 marks owed to Arnold by the king.8) Appears to concern Peter de P...ane.
Nature of endorsement
With regard to the first point: the Chancellor is to be written to, that he is to search the rolls of Chancery for the charter made to the said Arnold de Durefort, and to make letters of execution and intendance for Arnold de Durefort . . . for all the lands contained in the said charter, except for the lands granted to the Vicomte de Fronsac, as the king previously [ordered] the said Arnold to allow the said Vicomte to have the said lands, and the king would give him others of the same value.Item, with regard to the second point touching the land of Labourd: the rolls of Chancery are to be searched, and what the king can do without offence to the law is to be done for the said Arnold the son. And the Seneschal of Gascony is further to be ordered to inquire if the king was deceived in the grant made to Galhard Durant and Raymond Duraunt of Colombiers as the article claims. And on this what reason demands is to be done for the king.Item, with regard to the third point: the Seneschal of Gascony is to be written to, to deliver the possession of the land of Born to the said Arnold, according to the purport of the charter, insofar as it can be done without doing wrong to another.Item, with regard to the fourth point: the king has written himself to the Mayor and good people of Bayonne.Item, with regard to the fifth and sixth points: the Seneschal of Gascony is to be written to, that considering the estate of the said Arnold and the estate of the country, he is to retain Arnold at the king's wages according to what he sees is to the king's profit as the world now goes.Item, with regard to the seventh point: the Treasurer, Barons and Chamberlains of the Exchequer are to be written to, that if, when they have seen the bills that the said Arnold will show them, they can establish that the king owes Arnold 500 marks, they are to give Arnold his son and heir payment of or assignment for the aforesaid 500 marks.[Item, with regard to the eighth point]: . . . the king has written especially to the good people of Bayonne.

Note
A note on the guard gives a tentative date of 1340 for this petition, and notes that it was probably enclosed in no.13398 of C 81/269, which is dated 8 September 14 Edward III (1340). CCR 1339-41 p.546 is dated 4 October 1340, and would seem to be in response to the seventh petition: this confirms the date of 1340.
