Description
Petitioners
Mayor, jurats and community of Bordeaux.
Addressees
[Missing]
Nature of request
[This petition is damaged, and the first few lines are missing.] The Mayor, jurats and community of Bordeaux make three requests, in part remuneration for their expenses, losses and perils:1) They state that they have incurred great expenses victualling Saint-Macaire, maintaining the king's wars, finding men to fight in Flanders and in other ways. And in the last year the enemy have approached Bordeaux, destroying their lands and houses, stealing their goods and livestock, and killing their people, at a cost that can hardly be estimated. They ask that they might have back their banlieu (area of jurisdiction) and 'canale' (water supply?), which had been given to them by the king's predecessors, and removed by the king's ministers, and request letters patent to this effect, as well as instructions to the Seneschal, Constable, and Mayor of Bordeaux.2) They ask that they and their heirs might be free of customs and impositions on their wines and other merchandise throughout the realm of England; and they request letters patent for this.3) They ask that on the wines that they and their heirs buy in the Bordelais they might not pay more customs than the people of the towns of the Agenais which used to belong to the king but are now in the hands of his enemies, like Marmande.
Nature of endorsement
[On face, to first] Coram rege et magno consilio. The king is to be informed by the Seneschal and his other ministers concerning the circumstances of this business, and he will act towards them in such a way that they will reasonably consider themselves satisfied.[To second] [Deleted] Coram rege et magno consilio. [Not deleted] They are to have it in the same manner as the people of Bayonne.[To third] [Deleted] Coram rege. The Seneschal is to be ordered. They are to have. [Not deleted] They are to be quit of such tolls for three years.[None on dorse]

Note
The grant of the banlieu to the petioners on m.14 of C 61/54 is dated 1 June 16 Edward III (1342): if it is not in response to this petition, it would seem to provide a terminus ante quem.
