Description
Petitioners
Archambaut, Comte de Perigord and John (Joan) Colum (Colom) of Bordeaux.
Name(s)
Comte de Perigord; Colum (Colom), Archambaut; John (Joan)
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
[This petition is damaged and hard to read] Three separate petitions:1) Archambaut, Comte de Perigord and John Colum of Bordeaux, for himself and his brothers, state that certain charters concerning agreements made between them and the king, through William de Montagut, then Seneschal of Gascony, concerning their inheritances in Blaye, have been invalidated because, although they had been sealed with his seal, the Seneschal died before they could be engrossed and completed. They ask that they might be ratified, and that the present Seneschal and Constable, or their lieutenants, might be ordered to uphold their contents.2) John Colum states that his nephew, Bernard de Cussang, Lord of Langoiran, made an appeal to the court of France concerning injuries done him, at the time when Amaury de Creoun was Seneschal of Gascony, which was dangerous to the king, so that the king's council in Gascony asked John to advise Bernard to abandon it. Certain agreements were made on this and sealed with the seal of the Seneschalcy of Gascony. He asks that the present Seneschal or his lieutenant might be ordered to uphold them.3) John Colum states that Arnold du Bosk and Stephen Caussat of Bordeaux have been banished because of a disturbance between William de Montagut and certain people of Bordeaux, although at the time Stephen was ill at Dax and Arnold did all he could to stop the riot, as the Mayor of Bordeaux and other good people know well. He asks that the Seneschal might be ordered to inquire into it, and, if he finds that they are not guilty, that their banishment might be repealed.
Nature of endorsement
[On face, to first, deleted] The agreements are to be shown and . . . pleas which are pending in the court of France on the same . . .[To second, deleted] The Seneschal and his lieutenant are to be ordered that, when they have seen the said agreements and everything touching this business, they are to do justice. [Not deleted] These two petitions are to be sent, enclosed in the king's letters, to Hugh le Despenser and Bartholomew de Badelesmere, and before them and others of the king's council in Gascony whom they wish to call, the letters mentioned in the petitions are to be examined, and they are to take advice and further do what they conveniently can for them; and for the rest, they are to inform the king together with their advice about what [he can] further do.[To third] It is to be done in the form requested of the king's grace, because of the good service he has done.[None on dorse]
