Nature of request
William de Bergeys states that at the start of the war of Gascony, when the town of Bayonne had been captured for the king's use by the community of the town, their supplies were running out; so he took a ship and went to Spain to buy corn. When he was returning to Bayonne he was attacked by two ships from Bermeo, who seized his ship and corn, carried them off to Bermeo, and did as they pleased with them, although peace existed between the towns of Bermeo and Bayonne. William complained to the Mayor of Bayonne, who sent his letters to the community of Bermeo, to do justice to William and to return his corn and ship to him; but they did nothing. William has often complained to the king and council, showing letters of testimony from the town of Bayonne, and they have said that when there is peace between the two kings he will have a remedy for his losses and damages. He therefore requests compensation.
