Nature of request
Manent Fraunceis states that the king's father, in the fifteenth year of his reign, sent him to France to buy wheat for Scotland; which he did, despite difficulties in obtaining permission from the King of France to ship it, and despite losing some to Flemish piracy. He was given some payment and the King often ordered that he should be paid in full, but, through greed, Hugh le Despenser always prevented this. He requests payment, with reimbursement of his wages and compensation for his losses, so that he might not be destroyed by his good service.
Nature of endorsement
The Treasurer, Barons of the Exchequer, and Chamberlains are to be ordered by writ that, when they have seen the petition, the indenture and the payments, and the other things touching this business, they are to have payments made for what can reasonably be found to be due to him, both for expenses and loss of corn and for other things, by reason of the said purveyance. The King to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer and to his Chamberlains, greetings. We send you a certain petition shown before us and our council on behalf of Manent Fraunceis, merchant, enclosed with the present, ordering you that, when you have seen the petition, the indenture mentioned by that petition, and the payments and all other things touching that business, you are to have due payment made to the same Manent for what is found to be reasonably due to him by reason of that purveyance, both for expenses and for loss of corn and all other things. Witness myself at Westminster, 8 March, in the first year of our reign.
