[This petition is badly damaged: the entire right-hand side is missing] Laurence Hauberk and John Sothewell state that 8 days after the feast of St John in the . . . year . . ., the castle of Brest was and remains in possession of the Duke of Brittany, under the command of Lord Neville, the lieutenant . . . for hostages for the salvation of the castle, and Lord Neville agreed to acquit them. Against which promise . . . of their enemies in prison for two years and more, and often on the point of death, and put to such great ransoms that they will never be able to acquit . . . to save their lands. And when Lord Neville came to England he sued to the King and Duke for mercy, to . . . held forever. And the Duke then assured the King that he would acquit and release them, but nothing has been done. Please . . . to their great harm, loss and damage for the salvation of the castle, and to command that they be acquitted and amends made for their harm, until . . .
