Description
Petitioners
Vidal (Vidau), Lord of Poudenx.
Name(s)
Lord of Poudenx, Vidal (Vidau)
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Vidal, Lord of Poudenx, makes three requests:1) He states that he, his father, and his whole lineage have always served the king faithfully in his wars in Gascony and Scotland, and have suffered greatly, without receiving any compensation. And when Fulk Lestrange was Seneschal of Gascony he fought against the Lord of Albret at the command of William de Seint Fort, Seneschal of the Landes, to defend the king's inheritance; as a result of which, the Lord of Albret and his sons are trying to kill him, so that for five years he has not dared to come to Bordeaux to pursue his business. And Berard de la Bret has had Vidal removed from all offices that he holds. He asks that he might be protected from the malice of Berard and his brothers, and aided with some office in compensation for his losses and his service; and he especially requests the prevote of Saint-Sever in payment of his wages.2) He states that while there was peace between England and France, Raymond Arnold de Biarne, bastard, came to Poudenx with many armed men and tried to enter to destroy it, under pretext of feasting there. And when they saw that they could not enter, they killed and robbed the people of the bourg there, and Vidal and his men rescued their prisoners. This was because of an enmity which arose between him and the people of Bearn in the time of Fulk Lestrange, when Vidal was prevot of Saint-Sever. He asks for suitable punishment, as he has not dared to come to Bordeaux to complain before.3) He asks that the Constable of Bordeaux might be ordered to pay his wages, accounting with him for what has not yet been accounted for. He also requests some grace for his good service, and especially £50 tournois for term of life from the bailiwick of Toulouse.
Nature of endorsement
[This section deleted] The Seneschal of Gascony and Constable of Bordeaux are to be ordered to maintain the said Vidal . . .With regard to the first point: he is to have the king's letters of safeguard under his great seal, in suitable form, and he is also to have a command to the Constable of Bordeaux to pay him his wages from the time when he was in the king's service, as soon as he properly can. And the Seneschal and Constable are also to be ordered to let him have the bailiwick at the king's pleasure if he is suitable, and if they see that this is to the king's profit. And the Seneschal is to be ordered to hear his complaint about the damage done to him and to give him compensation and full justice, according to the laws and customs of the country. With regard to the second point . . .
