merchants of Vannes
Nature of request
Jean Bourdin and Alain Lebiboul, petitioning on their own behalf and as proctors and attorneys of Eon de Carne, Pierrot Bourdin, Jean Lepaintour, Pierre Guillem, Pierrot Teurel, Pierrot Devian, Richard Baerboutier, and Guillaume Menier, merchants of Vannes, state that they have previously petitioned before the Chancellor complaining that their ship was seized by John Fachon and his companions, who then sold it to John Tagnezan and his companions. Tagnezan and his companions, to avoid returning it, then claimed that the people from whom they had bought it were from Holland and Zealand, and thus enemies of the Bretons. They counter this claim in several articles, stating that if they had been enemies of the Bretons they would have taken prisoners for ransom, which they did not, and that they are in fact Cornish, and citing the provisions of two peace treaties. They request restitution of their ship.

Note
The treaty of Edward IV mentioned here is probably the Anglo-Breton truce of 1471, or the Treaty of Chateaugiron of 1472, from both of which the notorious pirates of Fowey were excluded (Ross, Edward IV, p.367). This and the mention of a Duke of Brittany dates this petition to 1483-1488, or 1524-1547. He is described as uncle of the king of England.
