Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/290/14469
Date
[c. 1331]
Description
Petitioners
Peter Bernard (Pey Bernat) de Pynzole (Pinsole), sergeant-at-arms.
Name(s)
de Pynzole (Pinsole), Peter Bernard (Pey Bernat)
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
sergeant-at-arms
Nature of request
Peter Bernard de Pynzole states that the king owes him £157 13s 3d sterling, by bill of the wardrobe, sealed by Robert de Wodhous, then Treasurer of the Wardrobe, and that after his coronation he petitioned the king and council for payment, and was granted a letter under the privy seal to the then Bishop of Hereford, the Treasurer, to pay him. But the Treasurer has continually refused, obstructed and delayed him, and he has been offered several assignments which have paid him nothing. He complains of his ill-treatment, and requests a letter under the privy seal to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer to allow him the sum in the bill, less 40 marks that he has received, deducting it from the emoluments of the farms of Jersey and Guernsey that he has in his keeping.
Nature of endorsement
He is to pursue his assignment at the Exchequer.
Places mentioned
Bayonne, [Gascony, France]
Southampton, [Hampshire]
Guernsey, Channel Islands
Jersey, Channel Islands.
People mentioned
Robert de Wodhous (Woodhouse), Treasurer of the Wardrobe
Adam [Orleton], Bishop of Hereford, Treasurer of England
[Edward II], King of England.
Note
From the mention of Adam Orleton, Bishop of Hereford and Treasurer of England, this petition must date from the early years of the reign of Edward III. The king requests information on the value of the baillis of Gosse and Seignanx in Gascony, with a view to granting them to the petitioner in lieu of the Channel Islands, from which he had been removed, on 23 September 1332 (Carte, vol. I p.79, m.2 of C 61/44, SC 8/168/8355). This petition must date from before this date. The instructions to pay the petitioner from the prevote of Bayonne, see m.5 of C 61/41 are dated 23 August 3 Edward III (1329), and, as this grant gave the petitioner nothing and he received another, two years ago as he says, the petition would seem to date from c.1331.
