Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/290/14467
Date
[c. 1338]
Description
Petitioners
Arnold (Arnaut) de Poyloaud (Poiloaud, Poyloaut).
Name(s)
de Poyloaud (Poiloaud, Poyloaut), Arnold (Arnaut)
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Two petitions from Arnold de Poyloaud:1) He states that he has served the king and his father in Scotland and Gascony and asks that in compensation for this service he might have the prevote of Dax, which he already holds for a term of years, for term of life.2) He asks that the Constable might be ordered to account with him for his wages and those of his men, and to give him an assignment for these wages against the farm of his prevote of Dax.These are preceded by a draft writ to the Seneschal of Gascony, dated at the Tower of London, 4 January 11 Edward III (1338), ordering him to inquire into the matter, and, if he finds that it is to the king's advantage, to grant Arnold the prevote for term of life, and to inform the king of his actions so that he can do what seems best to him.
Nature of endorsement
[On face, to first] He is to show his first letter, and it is to be done according to the form of his request.[To second] The Constable is to be ordered to account with him and to give him payment from the issues of the said prevote as he requests, so that if the farm of the said prevote amounts to more, he is to pay it for the king's use.[None on dorse]
Places mentioned
Dax, Gascony, [France]
Scotland
London.
People mentioned
[Edward II], King of England.
Note
This is a very problematic document. The place and date of the writ seem oddly precise, if it is a draft drawn up as the hoped-for result of the petition; on the other hand, if this is a draft writ sent to some official, with a copy of the petition which inspired it, then why is there no similar draft for the second petition, and why have the responses to both petitions been added in a different hand, as would be the case if they were originals? A date of c. 1338 seems clear, but the relationship of the various elements of this document to one another is not. Carte, vol. I p.72 is dated 26 August 1329, p.79 is dated 1 August 1332 and p.80 is dated 12 August 1333.
