Description
Petitioners
Raymond Arnold (Ramon Arnaut) de Montauser, proctor and attorney of the towns of Gascony.
Name(s)
de Montauser, Raymond Arnold (Ramon Arnaut)
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
proctor and attorney of the towns of Gascony
Nature of request
Raymond Arnold de Montauser, proctor and attorney of the towns of Gascony, of Bourg, Blaye, Saint-Sever, Sainte-Quitterie, Bonnegarde, Sorde-l'Abbaye, Labatut, Peyrehorade, Pouillon, Hure, and Labouheyre, and of the merchants of Bordeaux, who lent money to the late king in Gascony, during his wars with the King of France, states that they were assigned the vacancies in bishoprics, abbeys and priories in England until these debts were repaid, as can be seen from the late king's letters patent, which Raymond is prepared to show. But before they had received any money from this grant, the king and his council took it back into his hand, granting them instead half the issues on wools at the customs of Southampton. But again, before they had recovered half their debts, the king assigned this custom to the queen, in payment of a sum owed to her: which sum has been paid long ago. The Gascons' debts were instead to be paid from the custom of Ipswich, which is worth little, so that their payment has been delayed. The queen and her council promised them that she would ask for the custom of Southampton to be re-assigned to them when she was fully paid: they ask that it might be re-assigned to them.
Nature of endorsement
Because this of by my lady the queen, it should be shown to my lady. And if she rememebers it the council is advised that it would be justice and charity to grant this petition. The queen has testified before the Chancellor that the petition contains the truth, and she willed and ordered that what is requested be done.

Note
This petition is discussed in Malcolm Vale, The Angevin Legacy and the Hundred Years War, 1250-1340 (Oxford 1990), p.225. It dates from early in the reign of Edward III, and, by the reference to Queen Isabella being consulted, most probably to before 1330. The original grant of money from the customs of Southampton (CPR 1307-13 p. 60) is dated 24 March 1308. Cal. Mem. Rolls 1326-7 no.588 is dated 9 April 1327, and seems to be a prelude to CPR 1327-30 p.106, dated 12 May 1327.
