Name(s)
de Balfada, John
Addressees
Council.
Nature of request
John de Balfada, esquire, son of the late castellan of Bourg, makes three requests:1) He states that he and his late father were twice captured in the wars in Guyenne, and because of this lost all their loan (chevance) and sold most of their inheritance. He asks that he might have the castellany of Bourg for term of life, as his father held it.2) He also states that the Prince gave his father £300 annually, of the coin in use in Aquitaine, from the petty custom of Bordeaux, and asks the king to confirm this gift to him.3) He states that John Harpedene, then Seneschal of Saintonge, gave him the keeping of Moleu, which he has held for four years with men-at-arms and archers at his own expense, and asks the king to aid and relieve his great costs and expenses.

Moleu [unidentified], Saintonge, [France].
People mentioned
[Edward of Woodstock], Prince of Wales
John Harpedene (Harpenden), Seneschal of Saintonge.
Note
Dateable with reference to Saintonge, which was in English hands between 1360 and 1371. John Harpedene was Seneschal of Gascony between c. 1368 and 1372, but is here described as Seneschal of Saintonge, so this petition would seem most likely to date from after 1368.
