Addressees
[Not specified]
Occupation
Proctor of the people of Bayonne
Nature of request
The proctor of the people of Bayonne state that in the bastide of Hastingues a toll (peage ou barrage) was ordained, for the purpose of constructing a bridge at the bastide and of enclosing the town, without the assent and contrary to the will of the people of Bayonne, who have always petitioned the Seneschals to be allowed to pass freely and without payment, as they did before the bastide was built. Now the bridge has been built and the town enclosed, but the Seneschal of Gascony, and the bailli of the bastide at his command, still take the toll, and lease it at farm as a permanent thing, to the great prejudice and harm of the people of Bayonne. He asks that the Seneschal and bailli might be ordered to let the people of Bayonne, and their goods and merchandise, pass freely and quit of all payment, as they did before the bastide was built, as they have long suffered this for the king's honour, but if they do not have a remedy soon, there will be a great dispute and riot, or a great plea between the Seneschal and the town of Bayonne.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] Coram rege.[On dorse] Coram rege.Because the citizens of Bayonne have always shown themselves to be faithful and ready to serve the lord king and his progenitors, and those citizens were always free and quit of any toll or custom in the place where the bastide of Hastingues is now built, before it was built, it is agreed by the lord king's council, if it please the lord king, that the said citizens should be free and quit of toll granted by the lord king or his Seneschal of Gascony at the said bastide for a certain time, of the king's special grace.Afrterwards coram rege. And it pleases the king.Enrolled.
