SC 8/290/14457
Date
[1310-1327]
Description
Petitioners
Arnaudin (Arnaut, Arnold) de Brocas, attorney of the relatives of Renaud du Verger and his companions.
Name(s)
de Brocas, Arnaudin (Arnaut, Arnold)
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
attorney of the relatives of Renaud du Verger and his companions
Nature of request
[This petition is damaged]. Arnaudin de Brocas, attorney of the relatives of Renaud du Verger, formerly master of the ship 'la Cogge Seinte Marie' of Bayonne, and of the relatives of his companions, states that, as the ship was going from Flanders to Bayonne, it was attacked by malefactors from Genoa, who robbed it, and killed Renaud and his companions. Edward I wrote to the Podesta, consuls and community of Genoa, requesting compensation, but with no result. The present king has also written, and at the third time of writing they replied, saying that they would send ambassadors to answer the points contained in the letters. But still nothing has been done, and he asks that the relatives of the dead men might have compensation for their lost goods, and for their damages and expenses.
Nature of endorsement
Because the late king and the [present] king have often asked for a remedy to be given, [and it was] answered to the present king that messengers [would be sent] to inform the king on this matter, [but] nothing is yet done, [they] are to be ordered again [to] provide a remedy within a certain [time, as the king] cannot wait for much longer without doing justice.
Places mentioned
Bayonne, [Gascony, France]
Genoa, [Italy]
Flanders.
People mentioned
Renaud du Verger, master of the ship 'la Cogge Seinte Marie' of Bayonne
Edward [I], King of England
Podesta, consuls and community of Genoa.
Note
Datable to the reign of Edward II. CCR 1307-13 p.328 is dated 10 August 1310, and, as it does not mention the sending of ambassadors, would seem to predate this petition. It may have been in response to SC 8/269/13447, which is dated March 1310. The guard comments on the duplicate, SC 8/36/1787, place it at c. 1320, but there is no explanation for this - although this might be a likely latest date, as endorsements in the 1320s are increasingly in French.
