Nature of request
Ellis de Joneston makes two petitions:1) He states that he has been concerned with the processes concerning the Duchy of Aquitaine for 27 years and more, and has been promised great rewards by the king's father and grandfather; which he has not received. He asks the Queen to recommend him to her son, so that one of these promises might be fulfilled.2) He states that the charges of his office have greatly increased so that he is no longer sufficient to deal with them, and he has often asked that suitable clerks be assigned to the said office; but such clerks cannot be found without offering them sufficient fees and rewards to sustain their charges. He also states that it would be better for several reason if their fees and wages were paid by the Constable of Bordeaux than by the Treasurer of the Exchequer in England. He asks that such an ordinance might be made for the fees and wages of the clerks assigned to the office that people would be willing to take it on, and that these might be paid by the Constable of Bordeaux, and he also asks that the Constable might be ordered to pay his wages until he is discharged of his office or provided with sufficient support, and that consideration might be had of the great increase in his charges.
