Description
Petitioners
Burgesses of Blaye.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The burgesses of Blaye state that they wished to ordain for the cleaning and paving of their town, but could not do so, as they have neither commune nor mayor; so they ordained six upright men, burgesses of Blaye, to deal with these matters, and all others which touch the king's honour and the town's profit, saving the king's right. But as the burgesses have suffered great losses and damages in the late war and in the war thirty years ago, they cannot now do these things without the king's aid. They ask the king to grant them a certain custom on wines brought to their town, in aid of these things.
Nature of endorsement
The king has a great wish to do what he properly can for them, on account of their good behaviour, but because he is not informed if this would be to his harm or to another's, a writ of ad quod dampnum is to be sent to the Seneschal, and it should be returned swiftly.
Places mentioned
Blaye, [Guyenne, France].
Note
Datable to 1328 by m.2 of C 61/40, which is dated 26 October 2 Edward III (1328), and is clearly in response to this petition. This petition is discussed in Malcolm Vale, The Angevin Legacy and the Hundred Years War, 1250-1340 (Oxford 1990) p. 242, where it is thought to be addressed to Edward II.
