Nature of request
John Burdet, monk of the abbey of St Wandrille in Normandy, makes two requests:1) He states that his abbey has held, from time immemorial, the priory of Ecclesfield in the diocese of York, of the grant of the king's progenitors and the confirmation of several kings and popes. John held this priory when it was in the king's hand by reason of the war for 40 marks annually, until lately, when, through a false accusation at the suit of Henry Medbourne, clerk and chaplain to Lord Latimer, who was presented by the king to the priory, and through imprisonment, intimidation and the appointing of a biased jury, the result of Lord Latimer's maintenance, John has been wrongly expelled, and the king will lose his 40 marks. John requests a remedy, so that he might be restored to the priory.2) He states that since he has been in possession of the priory, Henry Medbourne has committed waste and destruction in buildings and in woods, to the sum of 300 marks. He requests a remedy.

Note
This petition seems to be contemporary with the common petition enrolled on pp.329b-330a of Rot. Parl. vol. II. It may have provided the information on which the commons' petition was based, or it may perhaps be the bill that the petitioner is instructed to present in parliament.CFR 1369-77 p.362 is dated 4 August 1376. According to CIM 1348-77 no.1003, Henry Medbourne had occupied the temporalities since December 47 Edward III (1373).
