Description
Petitioners
Guitard de la Brett (Albret), Vicomte of Tartas.
Name(s)
de la Brett (Albret), Vicomte of Tartas, Guitard
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Guitard de la Brett makes four requests:1) He states that he has been retained as the king's man and has the king's charters for this, and requests confirmation.2) He states that he cannot be paid the fee assigned to him for this retaining, because of the lack of money in the Constabulary, and asks that his fee may be assigned to him from the bailiwicks of Auribat, Pontonx, Gosse, and Seignanx, with the remainder to be received from the Constabulary in Bordeaux.3) He states that it is written in the terms of his retaining that if because of his adherence to the king, the King of France should occupy his lands, the king should give him compensation of equal value. The King of France has now, since he was retained, seized his wife's lands, worth more than £250 sterling annually, and so he requests compensation.4) He states that the King of France has ordered the Count of Foix and his ministers in the land that he occupies in the Duchy to harass and make war on him and his lands, because he will not leave his allegiance to the King of England. He asks that the Seneschal and Constable and the king's other ministers, and the towns and communities in those parts, might be ordered to aid him to defend his lands and drive them out.
Nature of endorsement
[On face, to first] The charters are to be confirmed.[To second] The Seneschal is to be written to, to have it assigned to him in a suitable place.[To third] The king will ordain in such a way that he will consider himself satisfied.[To fourth] The Seneschal is to be ordered to aid him. [On dorse] Coram rege et magno consilio.
