Description
Petitioners
Arnold Raymond (Arnaut Ramon), Vicomte of Orthe.
Name(s)
Vicomte of Orthe, Arnold Raymond (Arnaut Ramon)
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Vicomte of Orthe makes four requests:1) He states that the Prince granted him a certain annual rent because he was wounded at the battle of Poitiers, and asks that this might be assigned to him from the bailiwicks of Hastingues and Sorde, with their appurtenances, when they come into the king's hand, or from the prevote of Dax, which he holds already.2) He asks that, as a reward for the good service he and his ancestors have done the king, and their losses in that service, he and his heirs might have high justice with cognizance of criminal cases in his entire vicomte, notwithstanding the privileges granted to the city of Dax, as this justice, granted to his predecessor, was removed because of these privileges.3) He requests, for himself and his heirs, a toll on merchandise coming from Bayonne and passing before his town of Peyrehorade, which is partly of ancient usage and was partly granted twenty years ago.4) He requests an annual fair at Peyrehorade, on St Catherine's day and the following eight days.

Note
This petition must date from after the battle of Poitiers in 1356. The petitioner is granted a market at Peyhorade on 1 April 33 Edward III (1359)(m.7 of C 61/72, Carte, vol. I p.146), and there is some discussion of money owed to him on m.2 (Carte, vol. I p.147, with mention of a prisoner taken by him at the battle of Poitiers), dated 6 August in the same year. As grants of markets and fairs are often given together, and no mention is made here of a market, this petition might be later.
