Reference
SC 8/289/14440
Date
[? c.1278-? c. 1290]
Description
Petitioners
Citizens of Bayonne.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The citizens of Bayonne make two requests:1) They ask the king to confirm, for himself and his successors, their liberties, laws (fors) and customs, granted to them in the time of King Henry his father.2) They ask him to remove some the buildings which lord Luke had built which obstruct a very necessary fishery (nassa) and harm shipping, as they are a great danger and harm to the people.
Nature of endorsement
[On face, to first] At parliament.[None]
Places mentioned
Bayonne, [Gascony, France].
People mentioned
Henry [III], King of England
Luke [de Tany (Thanney), Seneschal of Gascony].
Note
The 'Dominus Lucas' referred to seems likely to be Luke de Tany or Thanney, Seneschal of Gascony between June 1272 and January 1278, so the petition probably dates from after his period of office. It may be the 'petitionibus hominum de Bayona' mentioned on a roll of summaries of petitions from the Easter parliament of 1290 (Rot. Parl. vol. I p.60b (no.182); PROME, Edward I, Roll 2, introduction).
