Description
Petitioners
Albert (Aubert) Metge (Mege), formerly Constable of Bordeaux.
Name(s)
Metge (Mege), Albert (Aubert)
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Constable of Bordeaux
Nature of request
Albert Metge, formerly Constable of Bordeaux, makes three requests:1) [This petition is slightly damaged] He asks that auditors might be appointed in Bordeaux to audit [his account] as he is too weak and ill to travel elsewhere.2) He asks that payments that he has made at the command of Oliver de Ingham, Seneschal of the Duchy of Guyenne, or of John de Haustede, his lieutenant, or by letters of recognisance or of testimony under the seal of Gascony or the seal of John de Haustede, might be allowed to him in his account; and that he might have letters under the great seal for this.3) He also requests letters discharging him of the victuals and other things that he, or another for him, have delivered to John de Weston, Constable of Bordeaux, or to others on his behalf, and that John might be charged with them.
Nature of endorsement
To the first article: it seems to the council, if it please the king, that he should render his account at Bordeaux, and that auditors should be assigned to him particularly because he has a letter under the seal of Gascony to render his account there, and because the comptroller by whom he should be charged is there. To the second and the third: the things fall under the account, and the auditors will do justice to him. And if they do not, he is to show it, and what is reasonable will be done for him.The Seneschal of Gascony and Constable of Bordeaux are to be ordered that, associating with themselves the king's council in those parts, they are to advise themselves of suitable persons to whom a commission might be made to audit his account there, and they are to inform the king with all speed . . .
Places mentioned
Bordeaux, [Guyenne, France]
Guyenne, [France].
People mentioned
[Edward II], King of England
Oliver de Ingham, Seneschal of the Duchy of Guyenne (Seneschal of Gascony)
John de Haustede, lieutenant of Oliver de Ingham, Seneschal of the Duchy of Guyenne
John de Weston, Constable of Bordeaux.
Note
Albert Metge was Constable of Bordeaux between March 1326 and May 1327. The mention of John de Weston, Constable of Bordeaux, suggests that the petition might have been presented during his period of office (before January 1330) - but this is by no means certain.
