SC 8/289/14427
Date
[c. 1336]
Description
Petitioners
John del Isdle (Isle, Lisle), Lord of Burley, Mayor of Bordeaux.
Name(s)
Isdle (Isle, Lisle), John
Addressees
King and council.
Places mentioned
Burley, [Rutland]
Guyenne, [France]
Bordeaux, [Guyenne, France]
Berkswell, [Warwickshire].
Nature of request
John del Isdle, Lord of Burley, states that on the ordinance of the king and council he has served for three years in the Duchy of Guyenne, charged with the office of Mayor of Bordeaux and with the keeping of the town, but that although during that time he has been at war and in the gravest danger, he has received only peacetime wages, which do not amount to a quarter of what he has spent; and he has had only his wages and his land to support these expenses, which have been completely inadequate to the sum he has had to spend. He asks that he might be paid the usual wages for time of war for the whole of his period of office; and that a better arrangement might speedily be ordained to save him, the town and the Duchy. And he asks that his manor of Berkswell, which has been pledged to finance his purveyance, might be saved so that he is not disinherited for default of payment, as he has to pay at Michaelmas next and cannot. And he asks that the king might further ordain for him as he pleases, in consideration of his hardships and losses.
Nature of endorsement
He who sues this bill on behalf of the Mayor of Bordeaux is to be examined as to what exactly he takes from the town for the mayoralty, and what he takes from the king, and if he receives it or not, and concerning the reward he had from the king on his going, and according to what is found a reward is to be ordained for him. And with regard to the £200 which he owes for his manor which is pledged, the king is to be spoken to, and it seems to the council that the king is obliged to aid him if he please. The Treasurer and Chamberlains are to be ordered to deliver to him the £200 to release his manor, of the king's gift, or to give him a suitable assignment so that he is paid before the start of August, so that his manor is not lost. With regard to the costs and expenses that he has incurred by reason of the war, beyond the fee he receives, the Constable is to be ordered to account with him and to pay him what is owed him, or to inform the king of what is owed to him for this reason, so that the king can ordain for his payment.
Note
SC 8/247/12341, which seems to be datable to 1341, mentions eight years' service as Mayor of Bordeaux: this petition mentions three years' service, so would seem to be datable to c. 1336. CCR 1339-41 p.68 is dated 20 April 1339.
