Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/289/14426
Date
[c. 1327-? c. 1340]
Description
Petitioners
Gerald (Geraut) de Poiols (Pujols), bacheler.
Name(s)
de Poiols (Pujols), Gerald (Geraut)
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Gerald de Poiols makes two requests:1) He states that he has served the king and his father in the wars in Gascony, in the garrison of Penne d'Agenais, and throughout the Duchy, and that because of this service his lodgings have been burnt and destroyed and he has received much damage. He asks that in compensation he and his heirs might be granted the franchise on wines granted to the inhabitants of Penne-d'Agenais, Agen, Villeneuve-sur-Lot and other places, especially as he is an inhabitant of the honour of Penne-d'Agenais, but cannot enjoy this franchise by reason of his gentle birth.2) He states that the burgesses of Penne-d'Agenais and Villeneuve-sur-Lot are levying new and unheard of taxes at pleasure, and forcing him to pay by his corn, wine and other goods: while he, as a man of gentle birth, should be free of such things. He asks that, in compensation for his service and his losses, he, his heirs and his goods might be free of such taxes as a man of his birth should be.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege. The king is not yet advised to grant the points contained within.
Places mentioned

Penne-d'Agenais, [Guyenne, France]
Agen, [Guyenne, France]
Duchy [of Guyenne (Aquitaine), France]
Villeneuve-sur-Lot, [Guyenne, France]
Bordeaux, [Guyenne, France].
People mentioned
[Edward II], King of England.
Note
From the context and the mention of the petitioner's father, this petition would seem to date from the early years of the reign of Edward III. The petition is not granted, but the instructions on m.3 of C 61/41, ordering the seneschal to prevent the people of Penne d'Agenais imposing new taxes on the petition and other nobles for the sake of enclosing their town, dated 20 October 1329, would seem to be related. This petition is discussed on pp.150-151 of Malcolm Vale, The Angevin Legacy and the Hundred Years War, 1250-1340 (Oxford 1990).
