Reference
SC 8/289/14425
Date
[1326-? c. 1334]
Description
Petitioners
Oliver de Ingham.
Name(s)
de Ingham, Oliver
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Oliver de Ingham states that, before he went to Gascony, John de Suttone enfeoffed him with the castles of Shocklach and Malpas for term of life, paying him £100 annually; but that while Oliver was in Gascony, under the king's protection, John entered Shocklach castle and seized the goods and chattels found there and did his will with them, to Oliver's great harm and against the king's peace; and he then abandoned the castle, leaving it without guard. He has also brought a disseisin against Oliver in Cheshire, saying that he has disseised him of £42 of rent, which he says do not pertain to the castles; but Oliver was peacefully seised of these before he went to Gascony, and for more than a year and a half after his going; so that he has clearly waited until he left to accuse him of this. He asks that the justice of Chester might be ordered to delay the case until Oliver is back in the country and can answer. John de Sutton has also brought a scire facias against Oliver in Norfolk, although Oliver owes him nothing.
Nature of endorsement
The king can, of his courtesy, send letters under his privy seal that he is to be aided insofar as is possible without offence to the law, but he cannot interfere with the law.

Norfolk.
People mentioned
John de Suttone (Sutton).
Note
Oliver de Ingham was Seneschal of Gascony between March 1326 and February 1327 and between June 1332 and July 1343. A date during his earlier period of office would seem to be suggested by the commissions for CIM 1307-49 no.965, which are dated 26 February and 13 March, 1 Edward III (1327): but the petition says that John de Sutton did not bring the disseisin until a year and a half after Ingham left for Gascony, which would seem to suggest a date after c. 1334. These castles are not mentioned in a list of manors to be returned to John de Sutton as a result of the 1327 inquisitions (CCR 1327-30 pp.63-64), nor does Ingham's name appear, and it seems likely that he was allowed to keep them, and that Sutton is pursuing his earlier grievance.
