Richard de Galeweye, Robert de Shilvington and Adam Tredeflour state that, before last Michaelmas, they had loaded Richard's ship with various merchandise and brought it safely to Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, but that when they had loaded it again for the return voyage, one John de Mier, calling himself Admiral of the King of France, and his men from Dieppe seized that ship with its cargo. They request a remedy and compensation for their ship and goods; especially since this ship was one that served in the king's last expedition to Scotland.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege et magno consilio.Certain good and loyal people are to be appointed by commission of the great seal to inquire by oath of merchants and others if the robbery and arrest mentioned in the petition took place as the petition claims, and by whom they were committed, and of whose power they are, and of what goods and merchandise they were robbed and of what value, and into other articles. And when the inquisition is returned, if the robbery is found to have taken place and the sea passage is closed as it is at present, they they are to have arrest against the peers and commoners (communers) of the robbers, provided that the arrest does not extend to the goods and merchandise of merchants living in England or to free tenements in England; and if the passage is open when the inquisition is returned, then the lords are to be ordered to do justice and the ancient course is further to be followed.
