Description
Petitioners
Arnold (Arnaut) de Seynt Martyn (St Martin), merchant of Bayonne.
Name(s)
de Seynt Martyn (St Martin), Arnold (Arnaut)
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
merchant of Bayonne
Nature of request
Arnold de Seynt Martyn, petitioning on his own behalf and that of John de Seint Crik, states that they and other merchants of Bayonne were robbed in Spain before the war, and that the king, in the twenty-second year of his reign, because the King of Spain (sic), who had promised to give them satisfaction, nevertheless did nothing, granted them letters of marque against the Spanish, as can be found from rolls and remembrances of Chancery. The king did not wish this to be pursued during the war. Arnold asks that the ordinance between the people of Bayonne and the messengers of the King of Spain promising compensation, and other documents that he has, might be examined, and that the rolls and remembrances of Chancery might be searched, and that arrest might be granted to Arnold and John until they have full satisfaction for their losses, as the king promised at Roxburgh. Arnold is prepared to inform the king on this, in accordance with the response given to his petition to the parliament at London.
Nature of endorsement
Coram thesaurario. The Earl of Lincoln is to be awaited.Because he who was King of Spain (sic) before the said war is now dead, the present King of Spain is to be written to, making mention of all the aforesaid, for him to do justice on this, as is rightly and in accordance with the agreement made on this with the assent of the late king to be done. And he is to write back to the king with what he thinks should be done on this, at the request of the king.
