Description
Petitioners
Peregrine (Pelegrin) de Guerre of Bayonne.
Name(s)
de Guerre, Peregrine (Pelegrin)
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Peregrine de Guerre of Bayonne states that he lost his ship in the king's service, captured with a load of corn at Bordeaux, because, although other ships of Bayonne, also loaded with corn, obliged themselves by an indenture made between John de Ellerker and their masters to escort him and his ship to safety in the Gironde, they abandoned him when they were surprised. This is attested by letters of the Seneschal of Gascony and of the Mayor and good people of Bordeaux, which, at the king's command, are in the possession of William de Kyldesby. He asks the king and council to examine these letters, and to give him . . ., according to the contents of another bill which is in their keeping, and to give him grace so that he can maintain his estate.
Nature of endorsement
He is to show the Seneschal's letters, and the Mayor jurats and [100 peers?] of Bayonne are to be ordered to call the [parties] before them, to examine the letters and charters, and further to do justice.
Places mentioned
Bayonne, [Gascony, France]
Bordeaux, [Guyenne, France]
Gironde, [France].
People mentioned
John de E[Eller]kare (Ellerker)
William de Kyldesby (Kilsby).
Note
The instructions to the mayor, jurats and 100 peers of Bayonne to do justice to the petitioner on m.19 of C 61/52 are dated 12 June 14 Edward III (1340) and the related instructions to the seneschal on m.18 are dated 21 June in the same year: they would seem to be in response to this petition. William Kilsby was Receiver of the Chamber 1335-1338, and Keeper of the Privy Seal 1338-1342.
