Robert de Langeton states that when he was warden of the castle of Calais, he was captured by the enemy and ransomed for so great a sum that he had to sell his lands, tenements and other goods to save his life. And while he was in England, assigned to the Cardinal bishop of Albano at the king's command, his wife, her daughter and his son were murdered, and all his goods in Calais carried off. He requests the bailiwick of Calais, with the office of collecting the custom in the harbour, henceforth to belong to the bailiwick, as this bailiwick is currently in his possession for term of life, or some other provision with which he can support himself, as the king has before, in consideration of his good service.

The petition is dated to c. 1357 as it refers to the petitioner's assignment to the household of the cardinal bishop of Albano, and he was one of two cardinals who were given protection and victuals to come to England in the summer of 1357 to negotiate the peace between the kings of England and France (CPR 1354-8, pp. 565-7).
