Description
Petitioners
Thomas de Laugar, merchant of Bayonne and proctor of various people of Gascony.
Name(s)
de Laugar, Thomas
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
merchant of Bayonne & proctor of various people of Gascony
Nature of request
Thomas de Laugar states that he is proctor for various people of Gascony, to whom the king owes various sums of money for their wages in the late war in Gascony, and that the king has often ordered his Constables of Bordeaux and their lieutenants to pay him these sums; but they have not done so. He requests swift payment, as he has been completely impoverished by his long suit, to the point where he has pledged the letters patent he has for the money owed him, and cannot help himself without the king's gracious aid. He also states that he gave these letters into the keeping of [Hugh] Hugelin, and that six years ago he returned some of them to his attorney, but kept back letters for £200 sterling and more; and of this Thomas has received £363 of Bordeaux. He asks that the arrears might be paid to him in England, where he has a wife and children.
Nature of endorsement
The letters which he claims to have delivered to Hugh Hugelin are to be examined, in the presence of master Jordan Morant, and of attorney John Gytard (or 'the attorney of John Gytard'), and when fuller information on this has been received from them, namely on how much of this was paid to the said Thomas, for what they find that Thomas has been paid from this sum, they are to retain the aforesaid letters in the king's keeping to this sum, and deliver the remaining letters to the same Thomas. And writs are to be sent to the aforesaid Jordan and attorney, and to others in whose keeping these letters are, on this.
