Reference
SC 8/288/14394
Date
[c. 1328]
Description
Petitioners
Albert (Aubert) Megge (Mege), king's clerk.
Name(s)
Megge (Mege), Albert (Aubert)
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
king's clerk
Nature of request
Albert Megge makes two requests:1) He states that the king's father gave him a commission to be Constable of Bordeaux, and he was promised and granted by letter that his account would be heard at Bordeaux; for he would otherwise not have accepted it. He asks that he might have auditors at Bordeaux from among the king's council - clerks, barons or gentlemen from Gascony, who know how Albert has behaved in office - and that they might have full power, when the account has been rendered, to give him full acquittance in the king's name, especially as he does not dare to enter France and cannot go upon the sea.2) He states that the king's father gave him the office of scrivener of the prevote of the Ombriere and comptroller of the market of Bordeaux, for term of his life, and asks the king to confirm this office, for which he can provide evidence from rolls and the transcripts of letters.
Nature of endorsement
[On face, to first] The king is not accustomed to assign auditors for accounts from Gascony, other than at his Exchequer in England, but for his long service it pleases the king that he assign a sufficient proctor or attorney to render account for him in England, provided always that he find a good and sufficient security before the Seneschal and Constable to make satisfaction to the king for the arrears, if any are found according to his account.[To second] With regard to the two offices, the responses given at the Northampton parliament are to be examined.[None on dorse]
Places mentioned
Bordeaux, [Guyenne, France]
Gascony, [France]
Northampton, [Northamptonshire].
People mentioned
[Edward II], King of England.
Note
Aubert Megge was Constable of Bordeaux between March 1326 and May 1327, and a parliament was held at Northampton in April-May 1328. This petition would seem to date from shortly after this parliament, and possibly from the next parliament.
