Reference
SC 8/288/14392
Date
[1327-c. 1334]
Description
Petitioners
Amaneu (Amaubin) de Vareis (Bares), lord of Montferrand.
Name(s)
de Vareis (Bares), lord of Montferrand, Amaneu (Amaubin)
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Amaneu de Vareis, lord of Montferrand, makes two requests:1) He states that Bertram del Goutt, vicomte de Lomagne, had in his last will appointed Amaneu's eldest son his heir to his castle of Veyrines, if Regie del Goutt, Countess of Armagnac, should die without heir of her body. She has died without heir of her body, but Edmund, the king's uncle, has given these lands to various people because the Count of Armagnac was against the king; although he cannot forfeit his wife's lands. He asks that the Seneschal or his lieutenant might be ordered that, if this is so, he should give these lands to Amaneu, notwithstanding any gifts made of them; and he requests letters to the Seneschal or his lieutenant to this effect.2) He asks that the Seneschal or his lieutenant might be ordered to inform himself concerning the losses in the war incurred by Amaneu in Saintonge and elsewhere in Gascony, and that he might be assigned a similar amount of rent in the prevote of Entre-Deux-Mers, until he has recovered his lands.
Nature of endorsement
The Seneschal and Constable are to be ordered to inform themselves how the vicomte d'Armagnac came to have those lands and how the lady would be the heir, and who those who now claim are, and by what right, and into all other circumstances, so that the king can be advised to do what he ought.

Regie (Regine) del Goutt (Gout, Got, Goth), Countess of Armagnac
Edmund [of Woodstock, Earl of Kent]
[John (Jean, Joan)], Count of Armagnac.
Note
From the mention of losses in war and of the Earl of Kent (Lieutenant in Gascony 1324-1326) as the king's uncle, this petition would seem to date from the early years of the reign of Edward III, probably before or at the time of the process held between the English and the French at Langon in September 1334, which foundered on the issue of the surrender of this manor to the French crown, among other things. The manor (without its maison-forte) was surrendered on 26 March 1335. This matter is discussed in M. Vale, The Angevin Legacy and the Hundred Years War (Oxford, 1990), pp. 254-5.
