SC 8/288/14391
Date

Description
Petitioners
Richard de Havering, clerk, formerly Constable of Bordeaux.
Name(s)
de Havering, Richard
Addressees
King.
Occupation
clerk, formerly Constable of Bordeaux
Nature of request
Richard de Havering makes three requests:1) He states that he paid various sums of money for the expenses of John de Havering, formerly Seneschal of the Duchy of Guyenne, and William de Deen, Seneschal of the Agenais, and for compensation for horses lost by them in the service of the king's grandfather, going from England to Gascony and back, which are attested by the comptroller; but for which he has been unable to have an allowance in his account rendered before the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer. He asks that they might be ordered by writ to give him an allowance, on the testimony of the comptroller, and also that he might have an allowance for his own expenses and for compensation for his horses.2) He requests a writ to the Treasurer and Barons to give him an allowance for his expenses for the ordering (arraiment) of his account for the Duchy of Guyenne after his departure from Gascony, and for his expenses and those of his attorneys from the time when they were working on the rendering of his account; and also for the bringing of four chests with rolls and remembrances touching the account from Gascony to England.3) He also states that when he had rendered his account as Escheator beyond [north of the] Trent for the king's grandfather, he showed before the Barons of the Exchequer writs and acquittances for payments made to various people, which were put in view in the rolls of remembrances of the Exchequer, and which have now been lost. He requests writs to the Treasurer and Barons to give him an allowance for all such payments as they can find to have been put in view in this way, notwithstanding the loss of the originals.
Nature of endorsement
With regard to the first petition: the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer are to be ordered that, when they have seen the said counter-roll of the payments, if they find that he has acted reasonably enough towards the said persons for compensation for their horses lost in the king's service, and for their expenses on the king's business, and also for his own expenses in going to the said Duchy and back on the king's business, they are to let him have a due allowance, notwithstanding the fact that he can show no special warrant for this. With regard to the second: The said Treasurer and Barons are to be ordered to let him have an allowance for the reasonable expenses incurred in the ordering of his account, as they find has been done to others in a similar case, who have rendered account in the said Exchequer. With regard to the third: the said Treasurer and Barons are to be ordered that, when they have seen the rolls and remembrances of the Exchequer touching the writs and acquittances shown concerning the view of the said account, they are to let him have a due allowance for what they find he has reasonably paid through the said writs and acquittances, notwithstanding that the said writs and acquittances are thus lost.
