Nature of request
Benedict Alard states that the king had ordered his ministers in Gascony to arrest and deliver to him goods belonging to Bretons to the sum of £400 sterling in satisfaction for a ship of his attacked by Bretons in the harbour of Brest; but this order was never put into execution because, by collusion between Edmund de Ellesfeld, prevot of the Ombriere in Bordeaux, and Otho de Mille Seynt, lieutenant of the Seneschal of Gascony and Mayor of Bordeaux, to delay him from his right, it was ordained that no arrest granted in the Duchy of Guyenne should be put into execution until the next Christmas. Because of this, the goods that had been arrested were returned to the Bretons. He requests grace and a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege.Bartholomew de Badelesmere and master Robert de Baldok, calling to them Richard de Elsefeld, are to take advice on this bill and to inform the king.Expedited.

Note
Maurice de Berkeley, who is mentioned as succeeding William de Montagut as Seneschal of Gascony, was appointed on 28 February 1320 (Carte, vol. I, p.55). This petition would therefore seem to date from around this time. SC 8/30/1478 and SC 8/30/1479, which appear to be related and slightly earlier, date from 1318.
