Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/288/14385
Date
[? c. 1335]
Description
Petitioners
Merchant vintners of Gascony.
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Merchant vintners of Gascony
Nature of request
The merchant vintners of Gascony state that they have been granted by charter of the king's grandfather, confirmed by his father and by him, that they might travel safely to the realm of England and sell their wines in gross there, within cities and burghs and elsewhere, and they granted the king in exchange 2s. of customs on every tun. They have been obstructed by the people of London, who have prevented them selling their wines to anyone except the Londoners. The king sent a sergeant with a writ ordering them to cease this, but the Mayor and Sheriffs, at the instigation of certain vintners of London, have refused to do so. They request such a remedy that they might sell their wines according to the purport of their charter, or that they might be discharged of their customs: as the king currently loses £300 and more of customs in London each year, since they now take their wines abroad.
Nature of endorsement
Because this business seems difficult, it is to be determined before the great council.
Places mentioned
Gascony, [France]
London.
People mentioned
[Edward I], King of England
[Edward II], King of England
Mayor and Sheriffs of London
vintners of London.
Note
CChR 1327-1341 p.306 is dated 18 March 1334. As the petition says that the king has confirmed this charter, it would seem to date from after this. CPR 1334-8 p.120 is dated 8 June 1335 (a second protection, for certain named merchants, is dated 24 June) and may be relevant. The hand might suggest that this is a plausible date.
