Description
Petitioners
Arnold (Arnaut) de Valac (Valat).
Name(s)
de Valac (Valat), Arnold (Arnaut)
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Arnold de Valac, formerly with Bernard de Lesparre, the king's enemy and rebel, states that as soon as Bernard went over to the French and became the king's enemy, he left him and came into the king's obeisance, and that because of this Bernard took his horse and equipment, worth £40 sterling. Since then he has been in the king's service, and has bought a horse and equipment for £30 sterling; and has received no wages or compensation. He requests some sum of money, such as pleases the king, by reason of his service and losses.
Nature of endorsement
The Seneschal and Constable are to be ordered to inform themselves of his losses and his service; and they are further to give him compensation in due manner.
Places mentioned
France
[Gascony, France].
People mentioned
Bernard (Bernat) de Lesparre.
Note
Instructions to pay the petitioner £20 sterling for £160 of Bigorre owed to him by Edward I, dated 30 June 2 Edward II (1309), can be found on m.1 of C 62/85. This would seem to suggest that it was in the reign of Edward I that the petitioner came over to the English side, and the petition has accordingly been given the tentative dates of 1298-1307.
