Reference
SC 8/288/14354
Date
[? 1326]
Description
Petitioners
Bos de Ternad (Ternac, Tarnac), knight.
Name(s)
de Ternad (Ternac, Tarnac), Bos
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Bos de Ternad requests confirmation of the gift made to him by the Earl of Kent, the king's brother and Lieutenant in the Duchy of Guyenne in the past, for him and his heirs and successors to hold until he has recovered his inheritance, which he lost because of the war in Gascony. He also asks that the Constable of Bordeaux might be ordered to pay him without delay the money due to him for wages and for compensation for horses lost in the war.
Nature of endorsement
The king will take advice from the Earl of Kent and from others with cognisance of the Duchy concerning the things contained in the petition; and he will further make a suitable response.
Places mentioned
Gascony, [France]
Duchy of Guyenne, [France].
People mentioned
[Edmund of Woodstock], Earl of Kent, King's Lieutenant in the Duchy of Guyenne.
Note
Edmund of Woodstock, Earl of Kent, was the king's Lieutenant in the Duchy of Guyenne between July 1324 and January 1326. The wording of this petition is unclear, but seems to suggest that he is no longer in this position: and the assumption of the endorsement that he is available for the king to consult would seem to reinforce this. He is also described as the king's brother, which would seem to suggest a date in the reign of Edward II: in any case the petition must date from before his own death in 1330.
