Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/288/14353
Date
[? c. 1305]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot of Blanchelande in Normandy.
Addressees
King.
Occupation
Abbot of Blanchelande in Normandy
Nature of request
The abbot of Blanchelande in Normandy, of the Premonstratensian order, states that the King, because of the war between him and the King of France, seized his lands in the isles of Guernsey and Jersey into his hand; and that when, after the peace, the abbot sued a writ to the bailiffs of the isles to have seisin of his lands again, the bailiffs did not fully return them to him. He asks that they might be delivered to him, as fully as they were taken into the king's hand.
Nature of endorsement
Let the form of the command previously given to the bailiffs be examined; and let a similar writ be sent for them to put the said command into execution, or give the reason why they have not done so.
Places mentioned
Blanchelande, Normandy, [France]
Guernsey, [Channel Islands]
Jersey, [Channel Islands].
People mentioned
[Philip IV], King of France.
Note
Like SC 8/288/14351, this petition is dealing with the property of alien religious houses, seized into the king's hand during the war with France, and the hand and language would suggest that it is of similar date. This is supported by PROME, Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337, Rotuli Parliamentorum I, pp.460-479, which notes that these petitions, with one exception, 'belong to the end of the reign of Edward I, with a heavy concentration in the year 1305'.
