Description
Petitioners
Arnold (Arnaut) Micol, king's butler.
Name(s)
Micol, Arnold (Arnaut)
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Arnold (Arnaut) Micol states that it has hitherto been customary for butlers to receive the custom of 2s on each tun of wine throughout England, answering to the Exchequer for this, because they could receive it more easily than anyone else, having lieutenants in every port in England, and also so that they could have money ready in the ports to store and carry wine for the king, and to pay for prises of wine. He asks that he might receive this custom for as long as it pleases the king and council for him to remain in this office.
Nature of endorsement
The Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer are to be ordered to take advice on what seems to them is to be done, and to inform the king.
Note
CCR 1330-3 p.210 is dated 26 February 1331, and is clearly the eventual outcome of this petition.
