SC 8/287/14330
Date
[c. 1327-? c. 1335]
Description
Petitioners
Peter (Peir) de Gawaret (Gabaret), who was lord of Langon.
Name(s)
de Gawaret (Gabaret), who was lord of Langon, Peter (Peir)
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Peter de Gawaret, who was lord of Langon 'en sa partie' [i.e. co-lord of Langon], states that the King of France holds Langon, and that the Earl of Kent had assigned him £1000 tournois in compensation, as appears from his letters, and delivered to him the land of Lillan, which is worth only £400 tournois. He asks that the Constable of Bordeaux might be ordered to give him satisfaction for the £1000 tournois, so that he can remain honourably in the king's service as he is accustomed to do.
Nature of endorsement
He is to have a writ to the Seneschal and Constable to inform themselves of his loss, and of the delivery that was given to him of the lands, and if the lands delivered are worth as much as the loss amounts to; and they are to inform the king, so that he can further do what he ought.
Places mentioned
Langon, [Guyenne, France]
France
Liverance (Lillan), [Guyenne, France].
People mentioned
King of France
[Edmund of Woodstock], Earl of Kent.
Note
From the hand, the language and the reference to the Earl of Kent, king's lieutenant in Gascony between July 1324 and January 1326, this petition would seem to date from the aftermath of the war of St Sardos. The petition is discussed in M. Vale, The Angevin Legacy and the Hundred Years War, 1250-1340 (Oxford, 1990), p. 242.
