Date
[? c. 1271-? c. 1307]
Description
Petitioners
Merchants of England and Gascony.
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Merchants of England and Gascony
Nature of request
The merchants of England and Gascony request justice against the masters of ships of England and elsewhere, in the matter of wines that they had loaded into their ships, part of which they threw overboard. They feel aggrieved, as the ships and their goods have come to safety, but the wine has been jettisoned.
Nature of endorsement
They are to show who these people are, and have a writ of si ex aperta malicia and nec tempestate.
Places mentioned
Gascony, [France].
People mentioned
Masters of ships of England and elsewhere.
Note
Tentatively dated on the guard to c. 1293, with regard to records of disputes between the citizens of London and the merchants of Gascony found on pp.87 and 99 of Rot. Parl. vol. I, (from, respectively mid-April 1292 (PROME, Edward I, roll 5, introduction) and Easter or July 1293 (PROME, Edward I, roll 6, introduction)): but these do not seem to be relevant. The hand and language, however, would seem to suggest a date during the reign of Edward I, and probably before 1300.
